  • How we look after your personal information and what we use it for

  • We use the personal information you give us to process your Council Tax or Business Rate account, claim for Housing Benefit and/or Council Tax Support, along with recovering any unpaid debts to the Council. We have a legal requirement to obtain this information and a legal requirement to share it with certain Government bodies for fraud avoidance, statistical analysis or financial management.
  • We use computer databases to process claims and store most of your information. They are held securely in a password-protected environment. Only authorised officers have access to the databases.

  • Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service

  • The Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service (D&FRS) has a duty to provide fire safety and prevention advice to residents of BCP Council. To enable that, we've agreed to provide them with the name and address of recipients of a single person discount. They will compare this with their data to identify those most likely to benefit from fire safety and prevention advice. If you do not wish your name and address to be shared with the D&WFRS, please let us know.

  • How long we keep your personal information

  • We keep records and documentation for six years after your account has closed or ended. We have to keep some of your information for set periods to comply with the law. In other cases we keep it for the length of time that we need to meet future business needs. We do not keep information for any longer than is necessary to meet the purposes for which it was collected.
